Leonie, Bronwyn and Katya were pleased to present interim findings from the schools survey at the National Education Summit in Melbourne in June 2022. Based on over 3000 survey responses, this presentation included information on how often and how much time teenagers spend reading for pleasure and what they think about reading for pleasure as well as the major challenges to teens reading more. It also discussed where teenagers find book recommendations, what genres and titles they are reading, and how they feel about their libraries (public and school). While the survey is still work in progress, at the moment mystery and crime titles, along with fantasy and dystopian novels are popular among fiction genres; while history, biographies and memoirs and self-help are popular amongst non-fiction titles. Titles popular on BookTok are also having an increasingly important role in influencing teen leisure reading choices.
